Babcock State Park

In the wooded highlands above the New River Gorge, rustic cabins, a swimming pool, and a working gristmill attract seasonal visitors. Hiking, angling, and cross-country skiing draw sports enthusiasts to Babcock State Park during the winter months.

Adventurous hikers may follow a remote park service road to the ghost town of Sewell on New River. Historians will enjoy its CCC-constructed buildings.

Gauley River National Recreation Area

Roaring through forested canyon, the wilderness along the Gauley River comes alive each October with the whoops and caterwauls of thousands of visitors running the world-renown Gauley River whitewater rapids.

While most commercial whitewater rafting trips ply the New River, focus shifts in autumn when Summersville Lake is emptied, and the Gauley River becomes one of the world's most-challenging whitewater rivers. Infrequent hikers, kayakers, and rock climbers explore the gorge through much of the rest of the year.

Grandview

The National Park Service's Grandview Visitor's Center features spectacular overlooks of the New River Gorge at its deepest point. Hiking trails of every variety explore the upland forests and the park's unique rock formations. Each summer, the park's Cliffside Amphitheatre hosts the outdoor dramas "Honey in the Rock," the story of West Virginia's tumultuous birth, and "Hatfields and McCoys," the legend of its most infamous feud.

Hawks Nest State Park

The towering rock edifice overlooking New River, for which this state park is named, has been visited since prehistoric man entered Appalachia.

Today a resort lodge, with an aerial tram, perches upon the cliffs. Hikers and anglers visit Hawks Nest State Park year round. Historians use it as a base from which to explore the New River Gorge National River.

Tram open weekends May - Memorial Day, daily until Labor Day, weekends through Sept., daily through the last weekend in Oct. Weekdays 11 a.m.-6:45 p.m. Closed Mondays except holidays.

Little Beaver State Park

The woodland trails surrounding Little Beaver Lake explore an upland of rhododendron thickets and ancient stands of white pine.

Local anglers fish for bass and bluegill along the lake. Little Beaver State Park is also near several golf courses and the National Park Service's Grandview and Glade Creek recreation areas.

Primarily a day-use park, Little Beaver State Park also offers lake swimming, paddleboat rentals, picnic shelters, and a small museum of local and natural history.
